International Census
The University of Minnesota has been a leader in providing higher education to students from around the world for more than 50 years. This has been part of its role as a leading public research and land-grant university in the Big Ten. Its recent efforts in curriculum integration of study abroad have made it a national leader.
Open Doors Survey Results
In rankings published by Open Doors, a national survey, the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities campus):
- ranked 6th among research institutions in numbers of students sent abroad on credit-bearing programs in 2005-2006, with 1,981 and
- ranked 22nd among research institutions in international student population
with 3,701 students in 2006-2007.
In addition, the Twin Cities campus hosts approximately 1,200 international faculty and scholars each year from around 85 different countries. Students come from 124 different countries.
Statistics are reported in OPEN DOORS 2007, the annual report on international education published by the Institute of International Education (IIE) in New York, with support from the Bureau of Education and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State.
