1898 - Born in Rising City, Nebraska

1923 - Earns medical degree from University of Nebraska - Omaha

1925 - Moves to China to work at a mission hospital in Fukien Province

1931 - Returns to U.S. and begins surgery fellowship at Mayo Clinic

1932 - Marries Miriam Louise Barber

1934 - Returns to China to run Fenchow Hospital in Shansi Province

1938 - Returns to U.S. during Japanese invasion of China, lectures on Japanese military build-up and foreign policy in the Pacific

1940 - Moves to Minneapolis and returns to medical practice

1942 - Elected to House of Representatives

1962 - Loses re-election bid, continues lecturing and writing

1994 - Dies in Washington D.C. at age 95
