International Travel Grants
Online Application System
Your application for an International Travel Grant will be completed entirely online. If you wish, you can set up a log in name and password so you can go back later and make revisions to your application. All applicants will be given a chance to review and revise application information before submitting it.

Before You Apply
Please review the grant guidelines thoroughly and make sure you have all materials prepared before beginning the application. In addition to basic personal information, you will need:
- Dates of trip
- Project costs (transportation, meals, lodging, and other expenses)
- Amounts and sources of matching funds
- Link to online C.V. or faculty profile or electronic version to upload
- Project proposal (1- to 2-page summary of your project): You will be asked to upload an electronic version.
Instructions and Tips for Completing an Application
Please review the following instructions and refer to them as you complete the application. The application system will open in a new window or tab so that you can continue to consult these instructions as you complete the application.
When you have prepared the above materials and reviewed the instructions, begin the application by clicking on the box at the bottom of this page.
Note that you will NOT be able to go back within the application to make changes until you reach the end. Also, if you choose to create a login name and password, you will be able to go back in and make revisions after you submit your application.
Welcome Screen:
- If you are starting a new application, click on "New Application." Even if you have applied for a travel grant in the past, you should still choose New Application.
- If you already completed your application and want to go back and revise it, enter the login name and password that you chose when you created your application and click on "Sign In."
General Information:
- Choose an application deadline appropriate to the date of your trip.
- Choose whether your application is for an individual or for a group. If a group application, make sure to detail the involvement of other participants, including names and titles, in your project proposal.
- College or campus: If you are at the Twin Cities campus, please use the "UMTC College" pulldown. If you are at a different campus, please use the "UofM Campus" pulldown. If your unit is not listed, please choose “Other.”
- If you wish, you may create a login and password so that you can return and revise your application in the future.
Project Overview:
- If you are traveling to more than two countries, please list the two countries where you will spend the most time.
- If you do not have exact travel dates, please give the closest estimate.
- "I am requesting funding to support..." box: This description of your project is only a short overview used for application review purposes only. You will be asked for a longer project proposal later in the application process.
Project Costs:
- If exact amounts are not available, please give closest estimates. You may choose to use the U.S. State Department per diem rates for meals and lodging. (A link is available on the application page.)
- The totals will appear on a later section of the application.
Matching Funds:
- Please provide the source and amount of any matching funds. Note that personal funds are not to be considered matching funds.
- The totals will appear in the next section of the application.
Travel Grant Request:
- Travel grants for individuals generally range from $1,000 to $1,500, but you may request an amount up to your remaining balance.
Supporting Documentation:
- Please supply a link to an online C.V. or faculty profile. If you do not have an online profile, please upload an electronic version (PDF files are preferred).
- For your project proposal, please upload an electronic version (PDF files are preferred).
- You may also upload any other electronic documents that you feel support your application, such as letters of invitation.
- If you have problems uploading documents via this application, please email supporting documentation to Molly Portz at mportz@umn.edu. Please include the following in the “Subject” line: OIP Travel Grant Application for <your name>
Overview:
- All of the information you have entered will be shown on this screen. If you need to revise any information, click on the “Let me change something ” button at the bottom. Important: Once you make your changes, you must click on the “Apply changes” button. This will take you back to the overview page.
- Once you are satisfied with the information you have entered, click on “Submit application.”
- You may also choose to print a copy of the information you entered. Note that when you click on "Print Application" your application will be automatically submitted.
Thank You:
- You will see a page acknowledging that your application has been submitted. In order to complete your application, you must click on “Log out.”
