INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK 2003: International Education Week 2003 is November 17-21. All departments, campuses, organizations, and student groups are encouraged to plan events that highlight the University's support of international education. “GLOBAL UNDERSTANDING” WORKSHOPS: ISSS introduces new workshops to help faculty and staff cross cultural barriers when working with international students and scholars. Topics include the University’s International Community, Around the World in 120 Minutes, Creating a Supportive Environment, and Communicating Across Cultures. Workshops are Oct. 21-Dec. 10.

FULBRIGHT BOARD: President Robert Bruininks has been nominated to the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. The 12-member board supervises and establishes policies and procedures for the Fulbright educational exchange programs. Bruininks will serve a three-year term, pending approval by Congress.


Program News

LIBRARIES: Su Chen (Head, East Asian Library), Betsy Friesen (Cataloger, BioMedical Library), and Peggy Johnson (Associate University Librarian) visited China Agricultural University Library (CAUL) in Beijing, Sept. 19-29. Chen and Friesen presented a workshop on creating metadata (intellectual access to digital resources/content), which was attended by 46 librarians from 23 institutions throughout China. Chen and Johnson presented additional papers on the future of research libraries. They also visited other research libraries in Beijing, including the National Library of China.

MEDICAL SCHOOL STUDY ABROAD ENDOWMENT: John and Anne Kersey have established an endowment in the Minnesota Medical Foundation to support medical student study abroad. Dr. Kersey, director of the University’s Cancer Center, has been a strong advocate of internationalizing the curriculum of the Medical School.

MEDICAL TRAINING IN INDIA: Kumar Belani, interim head of the Anesthesiology Department, will be leading medical students on a training experience in emergency medicine, anesthesiology, and perioperative care in Bangalore, India, in October. Four medical students have been selected for this new program

UNITED NATIONS STUDENT ASSOCIATION: United Nations Student Association welcomes all students to participate in Model United Nations Simulations in Chicago, New York, or San Francisco. UNSA provides an opportunity to meet people from all over the world while actively learning about important political concerns. The group meets Fridays from 4 to 5 p.m. in 2-227 Carlson.

Professional Notes

ANDREW COHEN: Andrew Cohen, English as a Second Language professor (Twin Cities), led a Summer Institute for English Learning Strategy Training and Research, at Nanjing University, in China, Aug. 12-16. More than 250 college-level teachers of English from 20 provinces in China attended the institute.

VALERIE MINER: Velerie Miner, English professor (Twin Cities), has received a Fulbright Senior Specialists grant to go to the University of the Center in Kairouan, Tunisia. The Fulbright Senior Specialists Program offers two- to six-week grants to leading U.S. academics and professionals to support curricular and faculty development and institutional planning at academic institutions in 140 countries around the world.


Study, Work, Intern, Volunteer, and Travel Abroad

“INTERNATIONALIZING THE CURRICULUM” PROPOSALS SOUGHT: Proposals and registration are now being accepted for next April’s study abroad curriculum integration conference in Minneapolis. Of special interest are presentations and poster proposals from faculty and staff on all four campuses who have participated in curriculum integration. Deadline to submit is Nov. 1.

PEACE CORPS: The University’s Peace Corps representative holds office hours in the Learning Abroad Center on Thursdays from 11:30 am to 1 pm in 94 Blegen Hall.

Funding Opportunities and Announcements

BENJAMIN A. GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP: Program enables undergraduates who have limited financial means the opportunity to study abroad. The program provides awards of up to $5,000. Students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application. Deadline for fall/academic year terms: October 15, 2003 (deadline for spring is April 15, 2004).

FREEMAN-ASIA: Program provides awards up to $7,000 for eligible undergraduate U.S. citizens and permanent residents to pursue study abroad in east and southeast Asia.

GENERAL COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP: For the first time, General College is making study abroad scholarship funds available for its students, as well as for students who began in GC and are currently enrolled in another college at the University.

INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL EDUCATION & RESEARCH PROGRAM (IMER) TRAVEL AWARDS: Applications for the Gault Travel Award, Jacobson (Scandinavian) Travel Award, Seoul National University Travel Award, Karolinska Institute Travel Award, Spink Research Award, and the John and Anne Kersey Travel Award are available though the IMER Office or www.meded.umn.edu/IMER/.

CENTER FOR ADVANCED RESEARCH ON LANGUAGE ACQUISITION (CARLA) PRESENTATIONS:

“THE PEOPLE SPEAK: AMERICA DEBATES ITS ROLE IN THE WORLD:”: J. Brian Atwood, dean of the Humphrey Institute and former head of USAID, will moderate a dialogue between former Senator Rudy Boschwitz and former ambassador to Rwanda Bob Flaten, addressing questions on the legitimate use of military force and the role of international institutions in conflict situations. Oct. 14, 12:15-1:30 p.m., Cowles Auditorium, Humphrey Center. Light lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. in the Humphrey Center atrium. Free, no registration required.

GLOBAL STUDIES LECTURE: “Firewater, Desire, and the Militiamen’s Christmas Eve in San Geronimo, Baja Verapaz, Guatemala (1892)” by Lowell Gudmundson, U of M alumnus, who teaches Latin American studies and history at Mount Holyoke College and Universidad de Costa Rica. This lecture is part of a larger research project dealing with African Americans and National Identities in Central America. Oct. 14, 12:45-2 p.m., Blegen 5 (Auditorium).
