NOBEL: Dec. 11 marked the 33rd anniversary of University alumnus Norman Borlaug receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. Learn more about Borlaug and his accomplishments: http://www.coafes.umn.edu/borlaug

CHINA CENTER: China Center will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2004. Kick-off event is Chinese New Year’s celebration featuring speech by former U.S. Senator Rod Grams on U.S.-China relations and traditional Chinese entertainment, Jan. 21, 4:30 p.m., Coffman Memorial Union Great Hall.

AWARD: Recipients of the new Distinguished Leadership Award for Internationals were announced Nov. 21. Award honors international alumni and friends who have distinguished themselves in their post-University careers. The nine winners represent CEHD, CLA, COAFES, Nursing, Medical School, IT, and Public Health. Next deadline for nominations is Feb. 16, 2004.

Program News

CARLA SUMMER INSTITUTES: CARLA Summer Institutes, ninth annual series of workshops for second language teachers, are now accepting registrations. Each institute is a highly interactive blend of theory and practical application. Teachers will engage in discussion, networking, theory-building, and hands-on activities.

CARLSON SCHOOL: The fall 2003 issue of “Carlson School,” magazine for alumni and friends, focuses on globalization, including reports from alumni who are working abroad. The issue will be online soon: http://www.csom.umn.edu/internationalprograms/page887.aspx

DULUTH: MORE THAN 150 UMD STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND MEMBERS of the Duluth community are preparing to leave for Palermo, Sicily, as part of the yearlong Italian American Festival. UMD music and theater students will perform the musical “Guys and Dolls” with students from the Bellini Conservatory of Music in Palermo. An art exhibition, "Perspectives from America," will open Jan. 8 at the Palazzo Scalafani, featuring original American artwork from a collection at the Tweed Museum of Art and from Duluth community artists. On Jan. 9, the UMD Jazz Ensemble I, a student and faculty jazz band, will perform in a sound and light show featuring music of the great Italian American crooners, with UMD alumnus Steve Vecchi as a guest soloist.

INSTITUTE FOR GLOBAL STUDIES and the EUROPEAN STUDIES CONSORTIUM: Institute for Global Studies and the European Studies Consortium this fall were once again designated National Resource Centers through the U.S. Department of Education’s Title VI grant program.

INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR TEACHER EDUCATION: International Society for Teacher Education 24th Annual Seminar will be held at the Twin Cities campus on Aug. 7–12, 2004. Theme is “Teacher Education and Policy Development – the Global Agenda.” Conveners are Dr. Craig Kissock and Dr. Judy Kuechle, Division of Education, Morris campus. Registration now being accepted.

LIBRARIES: Dr. Cheng Huanwen, director of Zhongshan University Library, and Mr. He Linxia, editor-in-chief of Guangxi Normal University Press, visited the University Libraries October 21-23. They toured library facilities and met with Library and China Center staff. They also met with Drs. Mather and Liu, retired professors from the Department of Asian Languages and Literature, who are assisting Dr. Cheng’s research project on Dr. Chiu Kai-ming, the former director of Harvard-Yenching Library at Harvard University and a consultant to the first head of the East Asian Library. Professor Liu and Professor Mather invited Chiu to the University of Minnesota Libraries after his retirement. The East Asian Library has assisted Cheng’s research with East Asian Library archives since 2001. The work will be published by the Guangxi Normal University Press in 2004. Su Chen, head of East Asian Library, hosted the visitors and coordinated their activities.

Professional Notes

INNOCENT AFUH AWASOM: Innocent Afuh Awasom, University Libraries and a fellow in the Scholars at Risk Program, gave a paper, "Libraries as Agents of Change," at the "Towards an Africa without Borders: Unification and Fundamental Change" conference held at the University of Wisconsin, Oct. 24-26. The conference brought together Pan-Africanist scholars from the U.S. and Africa.

MARY MAUS KOSIR: Mary Maus Kosir, director of the Carlson School’s international programs, has been named the school’s assistant dean for undergraduate programs, effective Jan. 15.

MICHAEL PAIGE: Michael Paige, College of Education and Human Development (currently on sabbatical), is a visiting professor in Japan at Nagoya University's Center for the Studies of Higher Education.

MARGARET DEMMESSIE and JOE HOFF: Margaret Demmessie and Joe Hoff, Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition, presented on "Maximizing Study Abroad: Strategies for Language and Culture Learning and Use" at the Council on International Education Exchange conference in Budapest, Hungary, Nov. 5 – 8.

MARLENE JOHNSHOY and LOUIS JANUS: Marlene Johnshoy and Louis Janus, Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition, have been involved in creating KlikkNorsk, a CD-ROM for learning Norwegian, which has now been published by Skandisk of Bloomington. KlikkNorsk is an interactive CD-ROM consisting of a Norwegian phrase-a-day calendar and a grammar overview with exercises.


Study, Work, Intern, Volunteer, and Travel Abroad

MODERN ICELANDIC COURSE: The University of Minnesota and the Sigurgur Nordal Institute at the University of Iceland are offering a joint course in Modern Icelandic for undergraduate and graduate students this summer. The six-week course begins in Minnesota for three weeks and then continues in Iceland. Application deadline is Feb. 13, 2004.

AUSTRIAN STUDIES: Austrian Studies offers one travel grant up to $1,000 to a graduate student proposing to do research in Austria or other countries formerly part of the Habsburg monarchy. Deadline: March 15, 2004.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE AND AREA STUDIES (FLAS) FELLOWSHIPS: Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships for graduate students: funding for Summer 2004 ($2,400 stipend plus tuition and selected fees) and Academic Year 2004-2005 ($14,000 stipend plus tuition and selected fees).

KEEFER VOICES OF VIENNA SCHOLARSHIP: $2,500 scholarship will be awarded by the Center for Austrian Studies to undergraduate seniors or graduate students in social sciences or humanities who propose to do research in Austria or other countries formerly part of the Habsburg monarchy. NIH FOGARTY CENTER INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIPS FOR MEDICAL STUDENTS: International fellowship program for medical students who wish to take a year off from their studies at the completion of their third year to undertake clinical research in a developing country. Fellowships include stipends of $18,000-$20,000 plus up to $6,000 for travel. Applications are due Jan. 6, 2004.

UPPER MIDWEST INTERNATIONAL HUMAN RIGHTS FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM: Upper Midwest International Human Rights Fellowship Program encourages individuals from the Upper Midwest to pursue a lifetime of human rights work — either as professionals or as knowledgeable volunteers — by providing them with opportunities for practical experience. Grants range from $500 to $4,000. Deadline is March 1, 2004.
