INTERNATIONAL GRADUATION RECEPTION: All international students graduating or completing a program from fall 2003 through 2004 are invited to attend a celebration with International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) and the Office of International Programs. Families, academic advisers, and friends are also invited. No reservation is necessary. Thursday, May 13, 3:30 to 6 p.m., Radisson Hotel Metrodome, Humphrey Ballroom.

NEW U GUIDE TO HOSTING INTERNATIONAL VISITORS: New U Guide to Hosting International Visitors is now available from the Office of International Programs. Guide provides planning, cultural, and protocol advice for arranging a short visit of an international guest or delegation. 2004 DISTINGUISHED LEADERSHIP AWARD FOR INTERNATIONALS: 2004 Distinguished Leadership Award for Internationals was given to five international alumni. Recipients are from Morocco, Uruguay, Nigeria, Korea, and Japan and are alumni of COAFES, Veterinary Medicine, CLA, Nursing, Public Health, and Education & Human Development. INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK 2004: International Education Week 2004 will be Nov. 15-19. Mark your calendars and start planning! The Medical School has already decided to honor the 50th anniversary of the University’s relationship with Seoul National University. The Office of International Programs is encouraging other colleges and departments to highlight their development assistance and institution building projects during IE Week.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION: The University conferred an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters on alumnus Yanni Chryssomallis at the Alumni Association’s 100th Anniversary Gala Finale and Annual Celebration on May 6. Yanni, an internationally acclaimed contemporary composer and 1976 graduate of the College of Liberal Arts, came to the University as an international student from Greece.

CARLA: The Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition is celebrating its 10th anniversary. CARLA is one of 14 U.S. Department of Education Title VI National Language Resource Centers. Its mission is to study multilingualism and multiculturalism, to develop knowledge of second language acquisition, and to advance the quality of second language teaching, learning, and assessment.

MINNESOTA ENGLISH CENTER: MEC’s Semi-Private Tutoring Course can help both employees and students enhance their English language skills for academic and professional success. Clerical and bargaining unit employees pay no course fees under the Regents Scholarship and Post-doctoral Associates pay no course fees under the Academic Tuition Scholarship.

MUSIC: The School of Music will host the XXXIII International Viola Congress June 9 to 13. The event is the world’s largest gathering of professional, amateur, and student violists and will feature concerts, master classes, and presentations. The event is chaired by Korey Konkol, professor of viola.

Professional Notes

H.H. CHENG: H.H. Cheng, professor emeritus and former department head from the Department of Soil, Water & Climate, received an Honorary Doctorate of Laws degree from the University of Minnesota at the college’s commencement ceremony on May 9. Cheng was honored for his great accomplishments in his field, including international projects such as consultant to the World Bank on soil reclamation projects in China, adviser to a United Nations Development Project regarding water conservation in the Yellow River, and other projects around the world. Little-known fact: This is only the 190th honorary doctorate given out by the University in its history!

INNOCENT AFUH AWASOM: Innocent Afuh Awasom, who began an appointment in the University of Minnesota Libraries in April 2003, has received a second grant from the Scholars at Risk Network's IIE Scholar Rescue Fund. This grant, supplemented with funds from Senior Vice President Robert Jones and the University Libraries, will allow him to continue his half-time appointment for a second year at the Magrath Library and the Entomology, Fisheries, and Wildlife Library. Awasom is from Cameroon, where he was a university librarian. He also received the 2004 Special Library Association Diversity Leadership Development Award, which recognizes individuals from multicultural backgrounds who display excellent leadership abilities in the profession.
