SENEGAL’S PRESIDENT ABDOULAYE WADE AND FIRST LADY VIVIAN WADE : Senegal's President Abdoulave Wade and First Lady Vivian Wade will visit the Twin Cities campus Sept. 23 and 24. They will be accompanied by a delegation to learn about past University connections with Senegal and to explore future initiatives in higher education and agricultural development. Both the President and First Lady will receive Doctor of Laws degrees for their public service to Senegal and other countries in Africa.

SCOTT DeLISI, U of M alumnus, was named ambassador to Eritrea in August. DeLisi, who received his bachelor’s and law degrees from the Twin Cities campus, is only the ninth Minnesotan to be appointed to an ambassadorship since 1949. [Star Tribune, July 5, 2004]

NEW U GUIDE TO HOSTING INTERNATIONAL VISITORS: New U Guide to Hosting International Visitors is now available from the Office of International Programs. U REPRESENTATIVES ATTENDED THE BEIJING INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION EXPOSITION : U representatives attended the Beijing International Education Exposition Aug. 24-26, including senior VP Robert Jones, UMM chancellor Sam Schuman, UMD vice chancellor Vince Magnuson, UMTC vice provost Craig Swan, UMC professor of natural resources and former interim vice chancellor Daniel Svedarsky, and several others. The trip's goal was to make connections and attract undergraduate and graduate students to enroll at U of M campuses. As the only U.S. institution at the Expo, the University’s booth drew large crowds of students interested in studying at an American institution.
Professional Notes
NEAL L. GAULT: Neal L. Gault, dean emeritus of the Medical School, will receive an honorary degree from the Seoul National University College of Medicine on Sept. 23 in recognition of his continuing work with SNU to build on the strong foundation of cooperation he helped established during the 1954-1961 Minnesota-Seoul National University Cooperative Project.
G. EDWARD SCHUH: G. Edward Schuh, regents professor in the Humphrey Institute, received the Legendary Member of the Society award from the Brazilian Society of Agricultural Economics in July. The award recognizes lifetime contributions to the profession.

STUDENT PROJECT FOR AMITY AMONG NATIONS (SPAN): In summer 2005, students
will be able to conduct research on a self-chosen topic in India, Spain,
or Uruguay. SPAN is a one-of-a-kind independent research program and is
open to students from all Minnesota colleges and universities. Students
earn eight upper-level academic credits.

FORMER CANADIAN PRIME MINISTER JEAN CHRÉTIEN: Former Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien will deliver the Humphrey Institute’s next Carlson Distinguished Lecture, “The Environment: Sustainable Development, Sustainable Commitment,” Sept. 16, 12:15 p.m. at Northrop Auditorium. The lecture is free and open to the public. Chrétien will discuss the imperative to enhance protection for existing park land and expand protections for wilderness. Mr. Chrétien also will touch on the Kyoto Protocol and the need for all nations to balance development with environmental protection.
