DISTINGUISHED LEADERSHIP AWARD FOR INTERNATIONALS: Distinguished Leadership Award for Internationals nominations are now being accepted. Deadline is Feb. 1, 2005. University-wide award honors international alumni, former students, and friends of the University who have distinguished themselves in their post-university work as leaders in their professional careers.

INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION WEEK 2004: International Education Week 2004 was Nov. 15-19. Colleges, campuses, departments, and student groups held almost 40 events to highlight the University’s support of international education. Tentative dates for IE Week 2005 are Nov. 14-18.

YEAR OF LANGUAGES 2005: Year of Languages 2005 will be celebrated as The Year of Languages in the United States. The goal of The Year of Languages celebration is to advance the concept that every American should develop proficiency not only in English, but in other languages as well.

Program News

CULTURE CORPS: Deadline to submit proposals for spring 2005 is Jan. 5. Culture Corps pairs an international student with a faculty or staff member to design and implement a project to internationalize the campus. Projects can be based in or outside of the classroom and can vary in size from a one-time event to reoccurring throughout the semester.

ESL CLASSES: The Minnesota English Center closed last summer, but the ESL department is still offering courses through its English Language Program. The new ESL classes are designed to meet the needs of undergraduates, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and University employees. Spring 2005 offerings are grammar, oral skills, reading and composition, composition, and pronunciation.

Professional Notes

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT: Professor GERRY FRY and eight graduate students from the College of Education and Human Development participated in the 12th World Congress of Comparative Education Societies in Havana, Cuba, Oct. 25–29. The college’s delegation was the second largest from any U.S. university. While there, Fry presented, “Education and Social Justice in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.”

CHINA CENTER: Dr. HONG YANG, director of the China Center, attended the Salzburg Seminar, Dec. 9-16. The seminar is a leading forum for promoting global dialogue on issues of pressing international concern and regularly brings together future leaders from government, business, academia, and the independent sector for week-long sessions of intense discussion and debate. This year’s theme was “China and the Global Economy.”

AUSTRALIAN GRADUATE-CREDIT INTERNSHIPS: The Learning Abroad Center has expanded its Global Experience Program internship offerings to Australia. U of M graduate and professional students are eligible to apply for internships in education, public affairs, social services, and the environment. Placements are for 8–12 weeks in various cities in Australia. Program cost is approximately $3,000, including housing.

WORK ABROAD IN AGRICULTURE, HORTICULTURE, AGRI-BUSINESS, & FORESTRY: The MAST International Program provides qualified individuals the opportunity to travel abroad to multiple countries to gain practical hands-on experience in agriculture, horticulture, agri-business, forestry, or related areas.

UNIVERSITY STUDENT WINS FREEMAN GRANT: Phouc Bui was awarded a $5,000 grant to study abroad at Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan, through the Council for International Education Exchange (CIEE). Phouc is a Carlson School of Management marketing major. He said he chose to study in Tokyo to experience an Asian culture and because Sophia University offers classes in consumer behavior in which Phouc hopes to gain valuable insight for his major.
