Join leading scholars and activists in examining the complex relationship between globalization and violence. Keynote speaker is Naomi Klein, award-winning journalist and author. Program News

HUMPHREY FELLOWSHIP SYMPOSIUM AND 25TH ANNIVERSARY: "Exploring the Role of Technology in Innovative Development Strategies" symposium, April 8-9, Atrium, Humphrey Center. This symposium combines cutting-edge technology, "out-of-the-box" strategizing, and the practicalities of public policy planning. Five inspiring speakers will share their expertise to help participants frame future scenarios and plan for integrated, cross-sectoral solutions to development issues. Symposium registration $65 ($40 student). Program and reception on April 8, 4:30 p.m., to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Humphrey Fellowship Program (reception free and open to the public).

Funding Opportunities and Announcements

GILMAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM: Gilman International Scholarship Program has received an additional $1 million in funding, which will enable the Gilman Program to offer a minimum of 500 scholarship awards during the 2005–06 academic year. Applicants must be undergraduates who are receiving a Pell Grant.

SCHOLAR ACCESS GRANT: Scholar Access Grant, from University of Wisconsin-Madison Global Studies program, supports postsecondary faculty wishing to incorporate international and global content into their courses. Grant covers travel expenses up to $750 to consult with specialists at UW-Madison and use the University’s international and global studies library collections. Awards are funded by a Title VI grant from the U.S. Department of Education.

TEACHERS OF LESS COMMONLY TAUGHT LANGUAGES (LCTL): The Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) is pleased to offer University of Minnesota LCTL instructors a number of special opportunities for professional development, including two free summer institutes on proficiency-oriented assessments for LCTLs and fee waivers for any of the CARLA summer institutes.
