FINALISTS ANNOUNCED FOR INT’L PROGRAMS ASSOC VP: Dr. Dennis Jett, dean of the International Center at the University of Florida, and Dr. Riall Nolan, dean of international programs at Purdue University, have been named finalists for the associate vice president for international programs position. Dr. Jett visited campus April 6-7. Dr. Nolan will visit April 12-13, with a public forum on April 12 at 2:15 p.m. in 2-206 CSOM. NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR AWARD FOR GLOBAL ENGAGEMENT: The award is given to faculty and staff members—active or retired—in recognition of outstanding contributions to global education and international programs in their field, discipline, or the University. Recipients receive a cash prize and an honorary title. Josef Mestenhauser, professor emeritus in the College of Education and Human Development, received the first award in 2005. The award is sponsored by the Office of the Senior Vice President for System Administration and administered by the Office of International Programs. DEADLINE: July 1, 2006. INT’L GRAD APPLICATIONS INCREASE: The Council of Graduate Schools
announced March 23 that international graduate applications to U.S. universities
have increased 11 percent this academic year after a two-year decrease,
although numbers remain below 2003 levels. The University of Minnesota
is seeing a 25 percent increase in applications from international students,
according to the Graduate School.

INT’L STUDENT GRADUATION CELEBRATION: International Student and Scholar Services will host its annual end-of-the-year and graduation celebration for international students and their colleagues, family, and friends on May 5 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Bistro West in the Humphrey Center. The event will include dancing, live music by "Tres Mundos," refreshments, souvenir photos with Goldy, and a short program. All are welcome; no RSVP necessary. MORE: 612-626-7100

LAW SCHOOL: The Law School will offer a five-week summer program for U of M J.D. students in Beijing, China, this summer. About 20 students are enrolled. Plans are still being finalized to offer an LL.M. program for Chinese students in Beijing.
MEDICAL SCHOOL: In February, the Medical School signed an exchange with Hong Kong University, one of the premier academic institutions in Southeast Asia. During their visit in October 2005, Medical School representatives were greatly impressed by opportunities for U of M medical students at Hong Kong University Hospital, the epicenter of research on SARS and avian flu.

FACULTY RESEARCH CIRCLE GRANTS will support collaborative, interdisciplinary
work on current and critical global issues. Circles can include U of M
faculty, graduate students, and scholars from institutions abroad with
whom the University has or is developing a partnership. Sponsored by the
Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Global Change and the Office

MAX KADE TRAVEL FELLOWSHIPS FOR SUMMER STUDY IN GERMANY: The Department of German, Scandinavian, and Dutch has received four travel fellowships of $1,000 each from the Max Kade Foundation to support undergraduate majors in German who will be participating in a summer program in Germany. STUDY ABROAD IN IRELAND SCHOLARSHIPS: Through a special opportunity made available by Arcadia, University of Minnesota students studying with Arcadia in Ireland during 2006–07 may apply for scholarships of up to $500. MORE: smith781@umn.edu
LUCE SCHOLAR: UMTC undergrad Joseph Walla was one of 18 students nationwide to receive a Luce Foundation Scholarship for a professional internship experience in Asia. Walla hopes to study human trafficking or conflict resolution in Thailand.
SULLIVAN RECIPIENTS: Three Twin Cities College of Liberal Arts students have been named recipients of the Katherine E. Sullivan Scholarships, which provide funding for a fifth year of undergraduate study abroad. The winners are Elizabeth Burr, who will do a year of directed field research in South Africa; Mark Foster, who will study Swahili and other subjects at the University of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania and conduct research at the Jane Goodall Institute in Tanzania; and Theodore Meinhover, who will continue his study of Chinese and Bahasa at the University of Indonesia in Depok and Yunnan University in Kunming, China.
