Headlines

PRESIDENTIAL DELEGATION TO NORWAY: President Bruininks will lead a university delegation to Norway, May 24-June 2. The delegation will visit several partner universities and will finalize an agreement with the University of Life Sciences and will renew an agreement with the University of Oslo. The delegation will also meet with U.S. Ambassador and U of M alumnus Benson Whitney and will present the Distinguished Leadership Award for Internationals to alumnus Jostein Mykletun (see International Alumni Awards below). INTERNATIONAL ALUMNI AWARDS: Six international alumni have been awarded the University’s 2006 Distinguished Leadership Award for Internationals. The award honors alumni, former students, and friends of the University who have distinguished themselves in their post-university work as leaders in their professional careers. The recipients are Dr. Benedicta Chiwokwu Agusiobo, Nigeria; Dr. Soon Ang, Singapore; Dr. Shenggen Fan, China; Dr. Jostein Mykletun, Norway; Dr. Jose Suarez-Torres, Ecuador; and Dr. Winston C. Y. Yu, Taiwan. Dr. Fan will accept his award at a ceremony on May 12 on the St. Paul campus, and Dr. Mykletun will accept his award at a ceremony in Norway to coincide with President Bruininks’s visit (see above).

GENE ALLEN TO RETIRE: C. Eugene Allen, associate vice president for international programs, will be retiring after 39 years at the University, the last eight years in his current position. He will be moving to a phased retirement this summer and will be assigned to several special projects. A new associate vice president has not yet been announced.

SEOUL NATIONAL U VISIT: A delegation from Seoul National University will visit the University of Minnesota May 22-23 to recognize the U of M's contributions to building SNU through faculty training programs in the 1950s and ’60s. The delegation will collaborate with the University Libraries with the goal of digitizing the records of the project, currently held in Andersen Library. To mark the occasion, faculty members who worked on the original project will be honored at a dinner hosted by SNU. After the Korean War, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) selected the University of Minnesota to advise and assist in rebuilding and modernizing SNU, targeting the fields of agriculture, engineering, medicine, public administration, veterinary medicine, and nursing. Nearly 300 Korean scholars studied in the U.S. between 1954 and 1962, most of them at Minnesota; 60 earned master’s degrees and 14 earned doctoral degrees. Two-thirds of the 59 U.S. faculty members who served in Korea were from the University of Minnesota.

S. AFRICA DISCUSSION: On April 26, a delegation from the South African consulate in Chicago, headed by Consul General Yusuf Omar, and representatives of the International Leadership Institute visited the University of Minnesota to discuss current collaborations and potential partnerships between the University and South Africa. U of M faculty presented information on current interests in the areas of horticulture, applied economics, and democracy and citizenship programs. This meeting was part of an effort to establish meaningful partnerships with South Africa. MLA LANGUAGE MAP: The Modern Language Association has released a significantly enhanced version of its Language Map, which provides previously unavailable information about the age, English-language speaking ability, and locations of speakers for more than 300 languages in the U.S. Users can view maps that track the number of a language’s speakers in any given state, city, town, county, or ZIP code. Program News

CROOKSTON: UMC received a $10,000 Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) grant to support distance-learning opportunities in Chinese and English with Zhejiang Economic and Trade Polytechnic (ZETP) University. ZETP and UMC signed a cooperation agreement last year for UMC to deliver an associate degree in information technology management and a bachelor's degree in computer software technology at ZETP. GLOBAL HEALTH COURSE: The University of Minnesota, in collaboration with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will offer the course, Diploma in Clinical Tropical Medicine and Travelers Health, July 5-August 25, 2006, in Minneapolis. The course will prepare practicing healthcare providers, 4th year medical students, and graduate students to work in global health, including tropical medicine, travelers’ health, and refugee and migrant health. MEDICAL SCHOOL/KAROLINSKA EXCHANGE: The Medical School’s exchange with Sweden’s acclaimed Karolinska Institute was highlighted in a story in UMNnews. The exchange is an endowed exchange that provides opportunities for six U of M students to study in Sweden and six Swedish students to study at the U of M each year. MORRIS SISTER CITY: The cities of Morris, MN, and Jiashan, China, officially became sister cities as part of the International Sister City Program when an official document was signed in Jiashan April 17 when Chancellor Sam Schuman, Mayor Carol Wilcox, and others from the campus and community visited China. UMM's China exchange program offers UMM students a May term or semester in China while students from China study at UMM. Chinese students will participate in UMM's 2006 Summer Scholars Program. DUNN PEACE RECIPIENTS: The recipients of the 2006-07 Dunn Peace Research Scholarships are Tessa Archambault (French and Theater) and Soo-yong Byun (Comparative and International Development Education). Archambault will conduct research through Student Project for Amity Among Nations (SPAN) and will be looking at immigration to the European Union. Byun's project will take him to Korea and Cambodia to investigate the impact of organizational initiatives on building a culture of peace in Asia and the Pacific.

FULBRIGHT STUDENT COMPETITION: Fulbright offers a variety of grants for one year of study or research abroad to more than 100 countries. Applicants must have proficiency in the written and spoken language of the host country. Campus information and applications will be available in May from the Graduate School. JUDD FELLOWSHIPS have been awarded to 23 master's and professional degree students. The Judd Fellowships are designed to increase opportunities for U of M master’s and professional degree students to study, undertake internships, and conduct research projects abroad. A primary goal is to increase exposure to and understanding of other cultures. Funding is provided by a generous gift from the Walter H. Judd Fund of The Minneapolis Foundation and additional funds from the Office of International Programs and the Graduate School. INT’L RESEARCH GRANTS: Two University faculty have received International Research and Studies Program grants from the U.S. Department of Education. Michael Paige, College of Education and Human Development (Twin Cities), will study “What is the Near- and Long-Term Impact of Study Abroad?” Mary Hermes, UMD College of Education and Human Service Professions (Duluth), will study “Online Ojibwe Language Teaching Modules.”

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH AWARDS: The Forum on Education Abroad’s Undergraduate Research Awards showcase the most rigorous and significant undergraduate research that occurs as part of education abroad programs or that focuses on education abroad itself. The award provides the opportunity for awardees to present their research at the Forum's international conference and for a larger number of students to have their papers published in a special issue of “Frontiers: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Study Abroad.” DEADLINE: June 16, 2006 MORE: http://www.forumea.org/undergrad_research_awards.html

MINNESOTA INTERNATIONAL CENTER: MIC's annual gala benefit will celebrate the Kingdom of Morocco on June 17, 6 to 10 p.m., under the Big Top at Circus Juventas in St. Paul.
