International Education Week 2006

International Education Week 2006 is Nov. 13-17. Colleges, departments, and student groups have planned almost 30 events system-wide to highlight the University’s support of international education. International Education Week was first declared by the U.S. Departments of State and Education in 2000 as part of their effort to encourage policies and programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study in the U.S.

Events at the University range from panel discussions and poster displays to receptions and an international quiz show. A full listing of all University events is at: http://www.international.umn.edu/IEweek/2006/events.html

Celebrate 2006—The Year of Study Abroad
Wednesday, Nov. 15; 3-5 p.m.
3M Auditorium, Carlson School of Management
Sponsored by the Learning Abroad Center
The program will include Craig Swan, vice provost for undergraduate education; Regent David Larson; and other speakers. A festive reception will follow.
All University faculty, advisers, and staff are invited.

AWARD FOR GLOBAL ENGAGEMENT: The University’s 2006 Award for Global Engagement will be awarded to:

The award is given to faculty and staff in recognition of outstanding contributions to global education and international programs in their field, discipline, or the University. An award ceremony will be held Thursday, Nov. 30, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the McNamara Alumni Center. RSVP: international@umn.edu or 612-624-5580.

NEW FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES: The University’s Office of International Programs will announce a major new funding initiative on Wednesday, Nov. 15. Look for the full-page ad in the Minnesota Daily for more details. The new initiative will include funding for interdisciplinary international research circles, international institutional partnerships, and graduate student international fellowships and grants.

BUILDING U.S.-CHINA BRIDGES LECTURE: Pieter Bottelier, economist and scholar, will present “India’s Growth from the Perspective of China’s Experience” at the China Center’s annual lecture on Wednesday, Dec. 6, at 4 p.m. at the Coffman Memorial Union Theater. Bottelier will argue that bilateral India-China ties, including trade and investment, are increasing very rapidly to the benefit of both countries and that a partial convergence of the Indian and Chinese growth models appears likely. ALUMNUS NAMED THAI MINISTER: Dr. Wichit Srisa-an, an alumnus of the College of Education and Human Development, has been named Minister of Education in the new government of Thailand. He received his master’s (1964) and Ph.D. (1967) in education administration and has received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University.

ALUMNI AWARD: 2006 Distinguished Leadership Award for Internationals recipient, Dr. Jose Suárez Torres, will return to campus to accept his award at a ceremony on Dec. 19. Suárez Torres, from Ecuador, received a M.S. and Ph.D. in public health from the University. The University-wide award honors alumni, former students, and friends of the University who have distinguished themselves in their post-university work as leaders in their professional careers.
