HAPPY NEW YEAR: The Lunar New Year begins on February 7, welcoming in the Year of the Rat. Many cultures in Asia, such as the Chinese, celebrate the new year on this day.
DISTINGUISHED LEADERSHIP AWARD FOR INTERNATIONALS nomination deadline has been extended to Feb. 29, 2008. This University-wide award honors international alumni, former students, and friends of the University who have distinguished themselves in their post-university work as leaders in their professional careers. DELEGATION TO NORWAY: Robert Jones, senior VP for system academic administration, will lead a delegation of University representatives, including VP for University Relations Karen Himle, to Norway March 28-April 6. The delegation will explore current and potential partnerships and strengthen the University's many ties with Norway.
PEACE CORPS: The Twin Cities campus ranked 9th among large universities in the number of students who became Peace Corps volunteers in 2007, with 71 volunteers. This is up from 11th place last year, with 65 volunteers. The top institution was the University of Washington with 113 volunteers. A Peace Corps representative is on campus Tuesdays, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., at the Learning Abroad Center in 230 Heller Hall and at the St. Paul Campus Career Center at 198 McNeal Hall from 2 to 4 p.m. (COMPLETE RANKINGS)
Program News
CENTER FOR ADVANCED RESEARCH ON LANGUAGE ACQUISITION (CARLA):
- Elaine Tarone has been selected as the full-time director of the Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition, after an extensive international search. Tarone is the current director of CARLA and is a full professor in the English as a Second Language Program. She will begin her full-time position on August 1, 2008. Until that time, she will continue her work with CARLA at 50%-time, while maintaining a half-time teaching load in the ESL Program. (MORE)
- The deadline to submit papers for the "Immersion Education: Pathways to Bilingualism & Beyond" conference is Feb. 15, 2008. Organizers are seeking proposals for papers, discussion sessions, and symposia on aspects of language immersion education related to four overarching conference themes: immersion pedagogy, culture and identity, policy and advocacy, and program design and evaluation. Conference will be held Oct. 16-18, 2008, at the Crowne Plaza Riverfront in St. Paul and is sponsored by CARLA and the Center for Applied Linguistics. (MORE)
MEDICAL SCHOOL: The Medical School will sign a new exchange agreement this spring with the Medical University of Graz, Austria.
Professional Notes
LOUIS JANUS, Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition, was reelected to serve another three-year term as president of the Norwegian Researchers and Teachers Association of North America (NORTANA).
MEREDITH McQUAID, associate VP and dean for international programs, served as a panelist on the International University Competitiveness Roundtable at Connect·Ed, a conference on global education January 22–24 in California.
Study, Service Learning, Intern, Volunteer, Work, and Travel Abroad
STUDY ABROAD CURRICULUM INTEGRATION SUSTAINABILITY RETREAT will be February 22 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the McNamara Alumni Center. All faculty, advisers, and staff who work with or are familiar with study abroad advising or programming are welcome to attend. Topics covered will be developing faculty-led short-term programs, advising strategies for learning abroad, student experiences, and more. Space is limited! (REGISTER)
Funding Opportunities and Announcements
INTERNATIONAL SCHOLARLY ACTIVITY GRANTS: The following University funding programs are designed to promote a global network of scholarship and engagement and encourage interdisciplinary and transnational partnerships. - Interdisciplinary International Institutional Partnership Grants: Supports the establishment and strengthening of innovative and sustainable international interdisciplinary partnerships between units at the University of Minnesota and those at universities and/or related institutions located at one or more international sites.
- Interdisciplinary International Research Circle Grants: Faculty grant program supports collaborative, interdisciplinary research circles on critical issues to be explored globally, transnationally, or internationally.
- OIP Doctoral Fellowships for International Research: Supports current doctoral students pursuing research and studies with an interdisciplinary and international focus. Fellowship will provide a stipend of $15,000 to enable students to devote full-time effort to dissertation research.
- OIP International Pre-Dissertation and Small Grants Competition: Supports current U of M graduate and professional degree students and are intended to support short-term activities that enhance the student’s scholarly project and/or professional preparation.
OIP: The following funding opportunities are administered by the Office of International Programs.
- Judd Fellowships: Fellowships for U of M graduate and professional degree students to study, undertake internships, and conduct research projects abroad. New this year are two fellowships available for doctoral students. DEADLINE: Feb. 11, 2008 (MORE)
- Dunn Peace Awards: U of M scholarships for undergraduate or graduate foreign research related to international peace. DEADLINE: March 3, 2008 (MORE)
- Alexander Dubcek Fund: Supports academic exchange between the University of Minnesota and the countries of Eastern Europe. U of M faculty, staff, and students are invited to submit proposals for activities that will support the general goals of the fund: institutional linkages, faculty and staff research, visiting scholars and students, and U of M student study and research. DEADLINE: April 1, 2008 (MORE)
INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL GRANTS for faculty are available from the Office of International Programs and the McKnight Arts and Humanities Fund. DEADLINE: April 1 for activities beginning May-August (MORE)
FACULTY TRAVEL GRANTS: Through Title VI grants from the U.S. Department of Education, the University’s Institute for Global Studies, the European Studies Consortium, and the Consortium for the Study of the Asias offer travel grants to Twin Cities campus faculty and instructors in support of projects that enhance the internationalization of the curriculum and international interdisciplinary research linkages and participation in national or international professional conferences or meetings, coupled with additional activities contributing to the internationalization of the University. Preference will be given to activities that are linked to the strategic goals of ESC, IGS, or CSA. DEADLINE: April 4 for travel occurring June to December 2008
FULBRIGHT: Competition for 2009–2010 Fulbright Scholar grants for faculty and professionals will open March 1. Application deadline is Aug. 1, 2008. (MORE) Note: Fulbright grants for students are coordinated through the Graduate School’s fellowship office.
STUDENT PEACE PRIZE is now accepting nominations of students around the world who are fighting for peace and basic rights. The prize is awarded every other year on behalf of all Norwegian students. It is the only peace prize in the world that is both awarded to and are given from students. The nominee must be a student or a student organization that has done an outstanding effort for peace, democracy, and human rights. DEADLINE: Feb. 11, 2008. (MORE)

CHINESE PHOTO EXHIBIT AND FILM: The Minnesota Film Arts will show the Chinese film, "Still Life," at the Oak Street Cinema on February 9, in conjunction with the “Three Gorges” photographic

HUMANITARIANISM AND CIVIL SOCIETY: James Orbinski, 1999 Nobel Peace Prize winner as president of Doctors Without Borders, will give a lecture as part of the Sawyer Seminar. Feb. 6, 4-5:30 p.m., at the Cowles Auditorium at the Humphrey Center. The year-long Sawyer Seminar (2007-2008) explores the extensive practice of international humanitarianism. (MORE)
IMMERSION CELEBRATION: Third annual event will celebrate language learning at its finest as Minnesota’s language immersion students gather to share their talents and create a link with the immersion community. Feb. 5, 10 a.m. to noon, Northrop Auditorium. Sponsored by: Minnesota Advocates for Immersion Network (MAIN), and the University of Minnesota’s Institute for Global Studies, Office of International Programs, and Consortium for Post-secondary Academic Success.
WOMEN'S DAY: 13th annual International Women's Day Celebration, "Women Leading for Global Justice," will be held March 15 at Coffman Union. Presented by the Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights and the University's Human Rights Program. (MORE)
