Headlines

NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR AWARD FOR GLOBAL ENGAGEMENT: The all-University award is given to faculty and staff members—active or retired—in recognition of outstanding contributions to global education and international programs in their field, discipline, or the University. Recipients receive a cash prize and an honorary title. Last year’s recipients were John J. Cogan, professor emeritus, College of Education and Human Development; Allen Isaacman, Regents professor of history and director of the Interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Global Change; and Vernon E. Weckwerth, professor, School of Public Health, and director, ISP Off-Site Executive Study Programs for Healthcare Administration. The award is sponsored by the Office of the Senior Vice President for System Academic Administration and administered by the Office of International Programs. DEADLINE: June 16, 2008. (MORE)

NORWEGIAN FOREIGN MINISTER Jonas Gahr Støre and Ambassador Wegger Christian Strømmen will visit the Twin Cities campus on March 26 and speak at a public forum on "Norway and the U.S. in the 21st Century" at the Humphrey Center from 6 to 7 p.m. (REGISTER FOR PUBLIC FORUM)

INT'L COLLABORATION CONFERENCE: The University of Minnesota and the federal Office for Research Integrity will sponsor the conference, "Challenges and Tensions in International Research Collaborations," Oct. 2-3, 2008. The conference will focus on complications that arise in the context of international collaborations in scientific research. The conference organizer is Professor Melissa S. Anderson, director of the Postsecondary Education Research Institute. (MORE)

MN SESQUICENTENNIAL LANGUAGES PROJECT: Residents of Minnesota are invited to participate in photo, poster, and mini research projects about the state’s multilingual and multicultural heritage during its 150-year history. Selected submissions will be incorporated into multimedia presentations disseminated throughout the state. DEADLINE: April 30, 2008 (MORE)


Program News

CARLA RECEPTION: The Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquistion welcomes Elaine Tarone as its full-time director at a reception on March 13 at 3:30 p.m. in 110 Heller Hall. Tarone will give a brief presentation, "CARLA and International Programs: Charting a course toward multilingual and multicultural proficiency," followed by a wine and appetizer reception from 4 to 5 p.m. (MORE)

CEHD: The Department of Educational Policy and Administration will offer its new Ed.D. doctoral program for international educators to the first cohort of students in summer 2008. The curriculum has been designed for professional international educators. (MORE)

CHINA CENTER: The China Center’s annual outreach program, China Day, will be Friday, April 18. More than 700 high school students who are studying Chinese will come to campus to participate in a half-day program related to Chinese culture and language. This year's event will highlight the Olympics, which will be held in Beijing in August. The China Center is still looking for volunteers, especially U of M students who are taking Chinese, to help as group leaders. CONTACT: 612-624-0016 or chinactr@umn.edu

SAVE YAR CAMPAIGN: Gabriel Kou Solomon, a student in the Humphrey Institute, is leading a coalition of student and community organizations to help his two nieces and other children who have been kidnapped in Sudan. The group is currently raising funds to send Solomon and two other students to Sudan. (MORE)


Professional Notes

Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs dean J. BRIAN ATWOOD received the Dr. Jean Mayer Award for Global Leadership from the Institute for Global Leadership at Tufts University. The award was established in 1993 to honor the former Tufts president by bringing to campus distinguished practitioners to challenge and inspire Tufts students. Atwood delivered a lecture about foreign aid and assistance on February 22 and participated in the university's 2008 Norris and Margery Bendetson EPIIC International Symposium on "Global Poverty and Inequality."


Study, Service Learning, Intern, Volunteer, Work, and Travel Abroad

INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCE SERIES: Students are invited to learn more about exciting opportunities abroad and enjoy free pizza. All events will be held in 110 Heller Hall. Sponsored by the Learning Abroad Center.

BEST PRACTICES: In conjunction with its new report "Strengthening Study Abroad: Recommendations for Effective Institutional Management," NAFSA: Association of International Educators recognized a number of universities for best practices. The University's Learning Abroad Center was cited in numerous areas, including integration into the curriculum, access to study abroad, process for selecting programs, course approval process, credit transfer policies, health and safety, financial planning, and scholarship development. FULBRIGHT GRANT INFO SESSIONS FOR UNDERGRADUATES will be held April 1, 3:30-4:30 p.m. in 110 Heller Hall and April 3, 3:30-4:30 p.m. in 315 Nicholson Hall. (MORE)

NATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS: Many national scholarships for study abroad have upcoming deadlines, including Rhodes, Marshall, Mitchell, Freeman, and Gilman. (MORE)

CENTER FOR AUSTRIAN STUDIES: Spring 2008 Lecture Series

CROOKSTON INTERNATIONAL DINNER SERIES: Featured countries for the remaining dinners are Czech Republic on March 10 and China on March 24. The International Finale Dinner wrapping up the series is April 2. Dinners start at 6 p.m. in the Bede Ballroom, Student Center. (MORE)

INDIA LECTURE: "Threat to democracy and Cultural resistance in India: A case study" by Shabnam Hashmi of Act Now for Harmony and Democracy (ANHAD), one of the foremost figures in the political battles around the meaning of secularism in India today. Founded in 2003 in the wake of the Gujarat carnage, ANHAD aims to intervene in the defense of democracy, secularism, and justice. Supported by the Ananya Dance Theatre, and the Institute for Global Studies and the dance program at the University of Minnesota. March 10, 4–6 p.m., Performance Space 100, Barker Center for Dance.

MINNESOTA INTERNATIONAL CENTER:

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION: Dr. Ladona Tornabene, an associate professor of health education at UMD, will display her fine art photography at an exhibition through March 31. All proceeds from the sale of her photographs benefits her Professor as Photographer Scholarship to help nontraditional students return to school and health education students intern abroad. The exhibition is at Master Framing Gallery, Kenwood Shopping Center, in Duluth. A reception will be held at the gallery on March 11, 4–7 p.m. (MORE)
