International Education Week Kick-Off

Members of the Student Project for Amity Among Nations (SPAN) will pass out International Education Week schedules of events and information about their study abroad programs.

International Film Fest: Cabaret Balkan (Yugoslavia)

"Cabaret Balkan," a ferocious black comedy, presents a microcosm of life in contemporary Belgrade by introducing us to a disparate gallery of characters who inhabit the Balkan city over the course of one hectic night. As the individual storylines intertwine and lead toward a common destiny, an unforgettable portrait of human survival is formed that the viewer is not likely to forget. This film was selected and presented by Brent Keeler, a Global Studies student.

Recognizing Our Place in Global Natural Resource Education and Research

Learn more about two study abroad courses to be hosted by College of Natural Resources faculty in 2003 and a summary of findings from the faculty survey on internationalizing the curriculum. Attendees will be invited to place a pin in a world map representing the area(s) of their current international research and education collaborations. Box lunch will be provided.

Special Reception for International Scholars and Students

This event will provide an opportunity to meet and interact with the international scholars and students of the College of Education and Human Development, who significantly enrich the learning environment of the college. The presense of international students and scholars has been a prominent part of CEHD. The college attracts many students and scholars from diverse parts of the world. Currently the college has major partnership grants with institutions in Azerbaijan, Hong Kong, the Kyrgz Republic, Poland, Thailand, and Ukraine.

MAST International Fair – See the World Without Leaving Home

Students from the Minnesota Agricultural Student Training (MAST) Program will share stories, pictures, and traditions from their home countries. "Visit" Argentina, Brazil, Czech Republic, Estonia, Guatemala, Hungary, India, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, and Ukraine. Refreshments will be provided.

Join students from around the world at this party sponsored by the Minnesota English Center (this University unit offers intensive English as a second language classes to international students). PLEASE BRING an item that represents your culture (for example, a photo of yourself snowboarding, hip hop CD, piece of art, memento from your grandparents, recipe or baked good, or item of clothing. Graduate and undergraduate students are invited to attend.

International Film Fest: Sango Malo (Cameroon)

"Sango Malo" is a tale of two schoolteachers and two philosophies of education. The strict headmaster insists on a conventional French-style curriculum that doesn't challenge the village power structure. When an innovative young teacher Sango Malo (Mr. Malo) arrives, he introduces a more practical education designed to make the peasants the focus of rural development. This film is an entertaining example of the socially engaged African cinema that is playing an important role in the democratic renewal sweeping the continent today. This film was selected and presented by Robyn Saphir, a Global Studies student.

International Film Fest: Himalaya (Nepal)

"Himalaya" tells the story of a village, which since time immemorial, has engaged in a winter trek to bring salt to its people and send out goods to be traded. The journeys are conducted by yak caravans. For many years the old chief, Tinle, led the treks, but he retired in favor of his son. Now his son is dead, his body brought back to the village by Karma, who wants to take his place at the head of the caravans. Tinle (Thinlen Lhondup) is not so sure. This film was selected and presented by Avigya Karki, a Global Studies student.

International Film Fest: Amores Perros" (Mexico)

Selected and presented by Jessica Root and Lisa Zacharias, Global Studies students. A look at the love in the lives of several individuals residing in modern day Mexico City. In this film, dogs are symbols in the lives of several people connected only by a car accident: a man whose fight dog earns him enough money to run away with his pregnant lover, his brother's wife; a supermodel and her lover, who share a phobia of being trapped as a result of the accident and whose dog is trapped as well; and an ex-guerilla who, upon finding a lost dog, is inspired to make amends with his daughter.
