Special International Pizza & Talk: "Commanding English"
How does a Hmong or Somali student who spent years in a refugee camp catch up and succeed in college? A U.S. resident student who moves from Vietnam to Minnesota in junior high has neither the full home-language literacy nor the time to develop full literacy and college preparation in English. The Commanding English Program in General College builds academic literacy through an international and multicultural curriculum embedded in typical first-year college courses. Students and instructors from Commanding English will talk about how this program works to create access and academic acculturation for multilingual Minnesota students both in the freshman year program and in the high school outreach programs. There will be tables representing many countries of the world with students to sharing their experiences.

Stories from India
Carleen Kerttula will share her stories and observations of India's country, culture, people, and business climate with a slideshow of pictures from her participation in the India Seminar, a Global Enrichment Elective. This is a brown bag event, so please feel free to bring your lunch and international interest along! Refreshments will be provided.

First Steps for Undergraduates
Attend a Learning Abroad Center First Step Meeting focusing on programs and resources for CHE students. This session will give basic information about study, work, intern, and volunteer programs abroad, and explain the services and resources available to students. Refreshments provided.

Medical School International Day
Steven Miles, M.D., professor of medicine, geriatrics, and the Center for Bioethics, will receive the 2005 Medical School's Alumni International Distinguished Physician Award and will present a special lecture, "Global Health and the Frighten Empire." Dr. Miles was named Minnesotan of the Year by Minnesota Monthly magazine and is an outspoken figure regarding the medical practices at Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and the dirty partnership between those torturing prisoners and the medical personnel participating in the process.

International Student Week in Pharmacy
International students in the College of Pharmacy will decorate a room and create educational displays related to their home countries. Brochures describing international education activities on campus will be available. There will be a program in which students from various countries will be invited to briefly tell about their country and how pharmacy is practiced there. The high point of the event will be catered international foods representing various countries.

Toward Success in the U.S. Workshop: Effective Classroom Participation for International Students
International students: Do you often have difficulty communicating with your classmates, professors, or advisers either in or out of the classroom? Attend this workshop and you will have the opportunity to:
- Learn about aspects of intercultural communication
- Identify your preferred communication style
- Develop strategies to communicate more effectively with U.S. counterparts
French and Italian Culture Night
This is a collaborative effort by the French and Italian Clubs to invite all of our students and any other interested parties to celebrate! We will be showing the Italian film, "Mediterraneo," as well as presenting a poster session including student-made posters representing Francophone cultures and Italian regions. We are also inviting a recently-returned exchange student to field questions regarding his sojourn in Montpellier, France, and his vacation in Italy. Information about study abroad programs will be available for all attendees and refreshments will be offered.

Costa Rica International Field Study

Welcome to IT!
The Institute of Technology invites international students here on the Institute's custom exchange programs to a luncheon in their honor. This year students are from Norway, Sweden, Taiwan, Switzerland, Scotland, Thailand, and Singapore. The international students will have the opportunity to get better acquainted with each other and to meet the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and faculty in IT departments in which they are studying.Also, IT students who have studied or interned abroad will be invited to speak on their experiences.

MAST International Fair
MAST International students will display highlights of their home countries through country booths, stories, and one-to-one conversations. Learn about the study and work experiences of MAST trainees in the U.S., and find out how these experiences have shaped their views of the world. MAST, formerly called the Minnesota Agricultural Student Trainee program, began in 1949 and has since sponsored more than 4,500 trainees.

Internships Abroad: Opportunities through International Cooperative Education
Interested in a professional internship abroad in your field of study? International Cooperative Education (ICE) places students in high-quality internships that provide hands on skills and experience. Placements are available in Europe, Asia, and Latin America in a wide range of fields including anthropology, business, engineering, health science, social work, and teaching. Placement typically lasts two to three months during the summer. Salary varies between $300 and $2,300 per month. Some firms pay a full salary while others pay a reduced salary or stipend and provide accommodations at a reduced or no cost.

Eid Celebration
The end of Ramadan brings happiness to communities around the world. The happiness depicts the bond that communities had forged during the last 30 days. Preview Performance Concert
U of M alumna Yoon-Hee Hwang from Korea will perform her chamber music composition, When You and I were Young, which was commissioned by the Graduate School in honor of its centennial. Dr. Hwang's former adviser, Dr. Alex Lubet of the School of Music, will also perform at the concert.
