The following are events that were hosted by various University of Minnesota colleges, departments, and campuses during International Education Week 2006.
Duluth Campus
UMD has organized almost 20 events in honor of International Education Week. The events are sponsored by the International Education Office, Hispanic/Latino/Chicana Learning Resource Center, the UMD International Club, MPIRG, Amnesty International, and the Royal D. Alworth, Jr. Institute for International Studies.
Twin Cities Campus

International Education Week Speaker Series
Educational Marketing in Asia: South Korea, Japan and China
Visiting Professor Sean Shin discuss the differences in doing business and the historical background of business within Asia. Shin serves as the English as a Second Language (ESL) director of student recruitment at the Crookston campus and is a visiting professor from SeJong University in Seoul, South Korea. Shin was born in South Korea; he received his bachelor’s in economics from SeJong University and his master’s in business administration.

Engaging America in International Aid
A panel discussion featuring top officials of the American Refugee Committee International, the Center for Victims of Torture, and Land O'Lakes International Division. The organizations, major players in international humanitarian and development assistance, all are based in the Twin Cities. Each brings a different perspective to the topic: Should Western-based aid organizations work more at home to build support for the needs of the developing world?

Paulo Freire International Community Service Grant Info Session
Learn more about the Paulo Freire grant at this info session. University of Minnesota undergraduate students can apply to receive a grant of up to $2,000 to complete a volunteer project abroad during the summer of 2007. International Experience
Manufacturing Management Program Manager Christo Robberts
will discuss the benefits of international exchange and
opportunities in a study-abroad experience, including places
to visit, program opportunities and length of study. He
will specifically visit with faculty, staff, and students
about the shared agreement with Anger, France.
Robberts is the program director for the Bachelor of Manufacturing
Management program at the Crookston campus. Robberts was
born in South Africa.

Passport Processing
The Passport Center will be on campus to help process passport applications. Individuals must bring the following items: completed passport application that can be picked up on site, certified birth certificate, $10 for photos, $30 check made payable to “Polk County Recorder, and $67 check made payable to the “US Department of State.”

International Education Week Speaker Series
International Products in an International Market
Assistant Professor Brent Sorenson will talk
about what it takes to do business internationally, the
difference in government buying agencies, and the bureaucracy
that goes with international trading. His discussion will
focus mostly on the Asian market, specifically Japan, Korea,
and Singapore.
Sorenson is assistant professor and director of agricultural
business at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. He
received his bachelor’s degree in agronomy and plant
genetics from the University of Minnesota, his master of
science degree in agronomy with an emphasis in weed science
from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, and his doctoral
degree of philosophy in agronomy and plant genetics with
an emphasis in weed science from the University of Minnesota.

International movie night: The Thief and the Dogs by Nagib Mahfouz
Sit back and relax, armed with a bowl of popcorn, and enjoy an intriguing film from abroad. Ashraf Seifeldin, a Carlson faculty member, will briefly introduce the film and discuss Nagib Mahfouz, the Nobel Prize winner in 1988. CBS Study Abroad Student Panel
College of Biological Sciences students who have studied abroad in various regions of the world will discuss their experiences abroad, why they decided to study where they did, and how their international experiences can be used for their majors. There will be a question-and-answer session following the presentations.

International Education Week Speaker Series
Working for a Global Corporation: Proctor and Gamble in London, England
Instructor Eric Burgess will share his experience of
working in England at the Proctor and Gamble Manufacturing
Consumer Products Plant, where he was put in charge of
reengineering the work system to transform the plant from
a traditional job-based system to a high-performing team-based
work system. He will also be talking about how the pay
and progression system was redesigned, as well as the development
of new technology transfer and training systems. In addition
to his work experience, Burgess will be sharing his cultural
experience at the plant and in England.
Burgess is an instructor of business management at the
University of Minnesota, Crookston. He is a native of St.
Louis, Mo. He received his bachelor’s in business
administration and his master of business administration
in business management from Lincoln University. He is currently
working on his doctorate in educational leadership from
the University of North Dakota.

This bi-monthly event provides an opportunity for international and U.S. faculty, staff, and students to socialize with those of similar interests in a casual environment.
