Korea Seminar Series: Bilingual Korean Reading with South Korean Authors
4:30–6 p.m., 101 Walter Library
Two of Korea's most accomplished contemporary writers will read excerpts from their works in Korean followed by English translation. Kim Yongha first gained notice with "Pager" (1996), a hit with readers and critics alike and "I Have the Right to Destroy Myself" (1996), a novel about assisted suicide scheduled to be published in translation by Harcourt Brace. So Hajin debuted in the journal Hyondae munhak (Contemporary literature) in 1994 with the story "Kurimja oech'ul" (A shadow outing) and has since published more than a dozen novellas and stories linked to the "shadow" theme. Translations will be provided by Dafna Zur (University of British Columbia), Janet Hong (creative writer and literary translator), and Bruce Fulton (University of British Columbia)

Nothing But Nets Malaria Workshop

Nothing But Nets is a global, grassroots campaign to save lives by preventing malaria, a leading killer of children in Africa. Hosted by the United Nations Foundation, this Malaria workshop will engage students in an interactive workshop to learn more about the epidemiology and prevention of malaria and develop the communications and advocacy skills to save lives in Africa. Speakers include Dr. Chandy John, director of the University of Minnesota Global Pediatrics Program, and third-year fellow Nadia Sam-Agudu. Food and beverages will be served. South Asia Seminar Series: "Two Bodhgayas"—a Talk by Rick Asher

Rick Asher is a professor in Art History and a specialist in South Asian art. His current research considers the architecture of contested religious space. Recent scholarship has focused on issues related to art as commodity, particularly looking at patterns of trade as they relate to works of art in India. He is currently Board Chair of the American Institute of Indian Studies and Editor-in-Chief of CAA Reviews, the electronic journal of the College Art Association. Publications include: The Art of Eastern India: 300-800 (1980), Art of India (2002), and Artists of Patharkati and Jaipur: Models for PreModern Modes of Production, South Asian Studies (1995).

Scott Laderman is an Assistant Professor in the History Department at UMD. Based upon his award-winning dissertation, Laderman will explore the history of the United States and Vietnam though the scope of tourism. Dr. Laderman received his Ph.D. in American Studies from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities Campus in 2005, where he also won one of four University Graduate School's Best Dissertation award for 2007.

Friday, Nov. 30—Veterinary Medicine International Education Day
The College of Veterinary Medicine will host an all-day session on international programs with students, faculty, and administration. A featured event will be a noon seminar with Dr. David Sherman, who was instrumental in developing the international programs in the veterinary school at Tufts University and has written the book, "Tending Animals in the Global Village: A guide to international veterinary medicine." Dr. Sherman help CVM determine the future directions of their international programs.
