Travel Approvals and Safety
The University of Minnesota encourages students, faculty, and staff to study and conduct research abroad. The Office of International Programs provides services and resources to ensure that these experiences are done in a safe, healthy, and legal manner.
The Office of International Programs coordinates:
- Cuba Travel License: Travel to Cuba may require the use of the University’s travel license.
- Travel Approval/Suspension : Individual students or faculty-led groups who wish to travel to countries on the U.S. State Department’s travel warning list need prior approval from the University’s International Travel Risk Assessment and Advisory Committee (ITRAAC), formerly the Education Abroad Suspension Committee (EASC). Additionally, in the case of a health, safety, or security concern, the ITRAAC has the authority to suspend travel and programs in a location.
- International Health Insurance: All students and some faculty or staff must obtain international health insurance before participating in a learning experience abroad. All students and scholars visiting the University from abroad have insurance requirements.
- Travel Resources: Health, safety, and travel resources and advice for international travel.
