Cuba Travel License
U of M Students
Eligibility:
U of M students in the following categories are eligible to apply to use the U of M license to travel to Cuba.
- Undergraduate or graduate students participating in a structured educational program as part of a course offered at the University of Minnesota. The program must be at least 10 weeks in duration.
- Graduate students doing noncommercial academic research in Cuba specifically related to Cuba and for the purpose of obtaining a graduate degree (i.e., the proposed research is independent research for writing a master's thesis, doctoral dissertation, or similar document).
- Undergraduate or graduate students participating in a formal course of study at a Cuban academic institution. The program must be at least 10 weeks in duration.
Requesting Travel Authorization:
U of M students requesting travel authorization in one of the above categories should complete the following steps:
- Students must submit a letter to the Office of International Programs indicating the nature of their request and the dates of proposed travel.
- The student's academic adviser or faculty member teaching the course must also submit a letter of support indicating that:
- the student is currently enrolled in a degree program at the University of Minnesota,
- the duration of the structured program is at least 10 weeks (graduate research projects are generally exempted from the 10-week requirement),
- the travel is part of an educational program of the University of Minnesota, and
- the Cuban study or research will be accepted for credit toward that degree.
- Purchase international travel medical insurance. Proof of insurance is required to obtain license.
- Sign and return a Release and Waiver form.
- Return all documentation to Stacey Tsantir (see box for contact info).
