International/Travel Medical Insurance for Traveling Outside the U.S.
Faculty/Staff Eligibility Requirements
University-issued international insurance, Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI), is mandatory for the following:
- All University of Minnesota faculty and staff leading students abroad (e.g. custom programs, IAESTE, international research teams)
Mandatory purchasing of CISI is waived for the following groups* (per Office of General Counsel and Office of Risk Management):
- All staff and faculty who have U.S. health insurance through the University of Minnesota and are covered by the MedEx assistance plan and not traveling with any students.
- Graduate students who have the MedEx assistance plan as part of a graduate assistantship
- Graduate students who are covered under the U of M’s Academic Health Center U.S. health insurance plan (see below), as this insurance includes the MedEx assistance plan:
- Division of Dental Hygiene
- Medical School and Graduate Medical Education
- Physical Therapy Program
- Program in Clinical Laboratory Science
- Program of Mortuary Science
- Program in Occupational Therapy
- School of Dentistry
- School of Nursing
- School of Pharmacy
- School of Public Health
- Veterinary Medicine
*CISI insurance can be purchased for these groups, but central policy doesn't require it. Departments/units may have internal policies to require CISI despite MedEx coverage so check your internal policies.
CISI through the University of Minneista is not available to faculty and staff for non-University business related travel. Insurance for personal travel is recommended.
Office of International Programs Travel Policy
- All OIP units will purchase CISI for their staff who are conducting University business abroad
- All University staff and faculty conducting OIP business abroad will be provided with CISI insurance
- The Learning Abroad Center will cover the cost of CISI for all staff and faculty participating in the following Learning Abroad Center/University business activities abroad:
- Site reviews
- Site visits
- Program reviews
