International/Travel Medical Insurance for Traveling Outside the U.S.
Student Eligibility Requirements
University-issued international insurance, Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI), is mandatory for the following:
- All undergraduate students participating in credit bearing programs (e.g., study abroad, internships abroad for credit)
- All undergraduate students participating in sponsored or co-sponsored non-credit bearing experiential programs (e.g., work, intern, research, volunteer, athletics and University Campus Life Programs abroad)
- All recent graduates—for up to one term after graduation—participating on University of Minnesota sponsored or co-sponsored credit and non-credit programs
- All graduate students participating in credit bearing programs (e.g., study abroad, internships abroad for credit)
- All graduate students participating in sponsored or cosponsored non-credit bearing experiential programs (e.g., work, intern, research, volunteer, IMER, VetMed)
Mandatory purchasing of CISI is waived for the following groups* (per Office of General Counsel and Office of Risk Management):
- Registered Student Organization (RSO) activities abroad because unlike University CLPs, RSOs have no direct relationship to the University.
- Graduate students who have the MedEx assistance plan as part of a graduate assistantship
- Graduate students who are covered under the U of M’s Academic Health Center U.S. health insurance plan (see below), as this insurance includes the MedEx assistance plan:
- Division of Dental Hygiene
- Medical School and Graduate Medical Education
- Physical Therapy Program
- Program in Clinical Laboratory Science
- Program of Mortuary Science
- Program in Occupational Therapy
- School of Dentistry
- School of Nursing
- School of Pharmacy
- School of Public Health
- Veterinary Medicine
*CISI insurance can be purchased for these groups, but it is not required.
Personal Travel
CISI through the University of Minnesota is not available to students for non-University related travel (e.g., travel while on leave of absence, family or personal vacations). Insurance for personal travel is recommended.
