International Health Insurance
The University offers many education abroad opportunities to enrich the educational experience of students; however, these opportunities require careful planning to minimize health and safety risks, including the requirement that all students (and, in some cases, faculty and staff) obtain international health insurance before participating in an education abroad experience. Students
All students traveling abroad in connection with their University of Minnesota studies are required to receive international health insurance approved by the University’s Risk Management Office. To assist students in meeting this requirement, the learning/study abroad offices at all University of Minnesota campuses offer mandatory international health insurance provided through Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI).
Most students are covered by this policy when participating in University of Minnesota sponsored and cosponsored programs, custom programs offered by colleges and departments, outside programs, WIV (work, internship, volunteer) opportunities, directed and/or independent study, and others.
Check with the learning/study abroad office on your campus to find out if you will receive this required insurance:
- Twin Cities
- Crookston
- Duluth
- Morris
- Rochester (Student Services office)
If you need to arrange your own insurance, please complete the following steps:

- NOTE: If you will spend extra time overseas before or after your program, we strongly encourage you to purchase adequate insurance to cover that time. CISI will allow students to purchase up to 30 days of insurance beyond the dates of the University of Minnesota coverage.
Faculty/Staff
All University of Minnesota faculty and staff are required to purchase CISI insurance when traveling abroad, if they are not covered by MedEx through a University of Minnesota health insurance plan. Faculty and staff leading students abroad MUST be covered by the same insurance coverage as students.
